Laurel Greenbriar (Smilax laurifolia)

If you've ever gone outside and walked off the beaten path (or the unmowed path!) you've encountered greenbriar. In the arboretum this week, one particular species of greenbriar is flowering. You can find laurel greenbriar (Smilax laurifolia) growing near the Fitness Center under a pond cypress (Taxodium ascendens).

These thorns are nasty and the plant can be quite tough.

Here are some young shoots. In the background, you can see the bark of the pond cypress. These two species have grown well together.

Do you see all of the tendrils?

Now for the fun part. Did you know greenbriar has flowers? Nice little ones that you have to search for.

The tiny, white flowers grow in clusters. They were delightfully fragrant.
