Slippery Elm Flower Buds

At the end of January, we see flower buds on the slippery elm (Ulmus rubra). You can read more about this individual tree here. All photos were taken January 26, 2019. A ladder was necessary to snap this photo and to snip two twigs for further examination.
Rusty-brown, rounded flower buds alternate along the gray, slender twig. The flower buds are soft and fuzzy to the touch.
The flower buds measure more than a quarter of an inch.
The dark, pointed leaf buds are tiny by comparison.
