Spring Flowers: Native Wisteria (Wisteria frutescens)

Over the past several weeks, cascades of wisteria flowers have added springtime charm to the landscapes of northwest Louisiana. If you perchance had the pleasure of experiencing the flowers up-close, perhaps they were delightfully fragrant? If they were, then those particular flowers belonged to one of the non-native Wisteria vines. Our native wisteria (Wisteria frutescens) can be found in the arboretum, and, unfortunately, it is without the characteristic enchanting fragrance.
Despite the lack of fragrance, native wisteria is still a good choice for the ornamental garden. The flowers are very handsome.
