Back in December, two young willow oaks, in 3-gallon pots, were purchased from Gladden Willis, who operates a tree farm in Webster Parish. The young trees were planted the same month and, by all appearances, remained inactive for the subsequent four months. Now in the middle of April our willow oaks finally look alive.

For
the past several months, willow oak twigs looked suspiciously dead. Due
to inactivity, twigs were tested for springiness multiple times.
Threats were made for the two new trees to leaf out. |
|
A couple of weeks ago things changed. The small, inconspicous leaf buds slowly transformed, and leaves began to emerge. |
|
Of the two new trees, this willow oak is about a week ahead of the other. Here we see leaves rather than budding leaves. |
|
Both trees were planted in irrigated, sunny locations. We tried to find the sunniest, wettest locations, with plenty of room for growth. |
