Inland Sea Oats (Chasmanthium latifolium)

Two spindly patches of inland sea oats can be found in the arboretum. This is a shade-friendly perennial that you might find growing at the edge of the woods or in an opening of the forest canopy. It's also found in town, growing alongside the road and on unkempt lots. Inland sea oats grow tall, so you should be able to spot them from your car, as you're driving around town. Be on the look-out!
The dangling, immature fruits might catch your eye this month. The fruits, which resemble oats, will lose their greenness as they ripen this summer, turning tan or cream-colored. Color of ripened fruit varies, however, so you might find a particularly stunning clump of inland sea oats, with copper or burgundy 'oats'.
