Red Buckeye (Aesculus pavia)

Immature buckeye fruits are conspicuous this time of year. They won't ripen until autumn, and yet they are already quite large.

Last fall the abundance of buckeye fruits necessitated a germination project. Seeds were  planted in the ground last November, and today, during the first week of July, the seedlings are nearly a foot tall.
