Louisiana Palmetto (Sabal minor)

On February 6, 2021, a Louisiana palmetto was added to the grassy slope near Cline and Rotary Halls. It was planted toward the bottom of the slope, in the shade of two overcup oaks (Quercus lyrata). This palmetto was an arboretum volunteer, and it has been stuck in a pot since the fall of 2013. Several leaves were trimmed before knocking it loose from the container and returning it to the ground.

This section of the arboretum seems relatively bare compared to the older section near Hamilton Hall. There is plenty of grass and sunshine and too few trees, which means that water quickly runs off during heavy rains. The palmetto planting is primarily intended to impede water flow by adding more vegetation to the landscape.

Last May, another Louisiana palmetto was planted in the same area, also with a mind to build up vegetation to reduce rainwater run-off. This palmetto happily survived through the hot summer, so another palmetto was added to the mix.
