Wax Myrtle (Myrica cerifera)

All of the wax myrtles in the arboretum show winter weather damage: they turned brown! Wax myrtle (Myrica cerifera) is an evergreen shrub native to Louisiana, and you can always count on it to provide greenery to the winter landscape. Unfortunately, this past week, the weather was just too cold. Leaves were covered with snow for approximately five days and the low temperature for the week was 2ºF.

Wax myrtle is found in a few different spots in the arboretum; all plants are uniformly losing their greenness. The leaves are turning shades of brown.
