Coral Bean (Erythrina herbacea)

In northern Louisiana, which is considered the northern edge of its range, coral bean is expected to die back to the ground once a year. This year, at the beginning of February, it was still green. True, it didn't have the full luster of summer, but it was surprisingly green, making it easy to identify.

Coral bean has compound leaves. This is one leaf with three leaflets.

The week following Valentine's Day was bitterly cold, and a snow-ice mixture covered the landscape for several days. The coral bean finally lost its greenness and now stands as a tangle of brown, thorny stems. Photograph taken February 23, 2021.
