Neon Skimmer (Libellula croceipennis)

Bright red dragonflies have been spotted in the arboretum. They fly around the low, wet areas, particularly along the drainage channel. This individual was photographed at the top of the arboretum drainage, between the Student Union Building and Hamilton Hall.

This is a male neon skimmer (Libellula croceipennis). He was seen quarreling with another male, presumably defending the territory that he has claimed.

As long as the other male neon skimmer kept his distance, this individual was content to perch for a brief photoshoot.

The bright red color is stunning!
