Blue Phlox (Phlox divaricata)

Our patch of blue phlox (Phlox divaricata) is particularly thick this year. In spring 2013, several individual plants were collected from the grounds of the arboretum and transplanted to this shady location. The red buckeye (Aesculus pavia) volunteered the same year.

A special visitor was seen enjoying the phlox.

Do you see the two yellow bands? This is a day-flying moth, the Nessus sphinx (Amphion floridensis).

Here we see it buzzing among blue phlox flowers.

This little fiend is hard to photograph; without a high-speed lens, its wings will always be a blur.
