This time of year you can find red buckeye fruits in the arboretum. Red buckeyes (Aesculus pavia) do very well on our clay slopes, so there are several young trees, mostly to be found in the older section of the arboretum, between the Student Union Building and Hamilton Hall. The spindly young tree above is a volunteer, more than six years old. It germinated in an herbaceous bed with Phlox divaricata and Geranium maculatum. |
The bulbous fruits weigh down the branches of young trees. |
This fruit is a capsule that appears to contain three large seeds. The ripening of buckeye fruits coincides with deer season in Louisiana, and the large seed is prized as a talisman by hunters. |
