Carolina Moonseed (Cocculus carolinus)

Without asking permission, Carolina moonseed (Cocculus carolinus) firmly established itself in the arboretum. Thanks to those pretty red fruits, this vine pops up all over the place. Carolina moonseed is difficult to pull up, so I routinely snip it back. However, in the shady areas of the arboretum, particularly in the lower pond, this vine is terribly successful. The vine pictured above is closer to the Fitness Center; it is entwined with a French mulberry bush growing in the shade of an eastern red cedar.

Leaves are dark green and glossy. Leaf-shape varies along the vine: leaves might be triangular, tongue-shaped, or even resemble an elephant's head.

The glistening red fruits appear in clusters. They are small, approximately ¼ inch in length.

Underneath, leaves are light green.
