Changes in the Arboretum Landscape

Infrastructure of the arboretum doesn't change too often. Bridges, paths and lamps require routine maintenance, but, for the most part, they stay in place and stay the same. This past year we had two changes worth noting.

On September 5, 2022, the Shumard oak (Quercus shumardii) was featured on the blog as our tree of the week. A piece of pink tape was tied around the trunk so that readers could easily identify the tree in the photograph. Do you see the tall boxy structure that has the word 'EMERGENCY' printed on it? It also has a colored light installed on the top. This structure had a red button that someone could push to call for help; it could also be used as a telephone.

Fourteen months later, on November 12, 2023, the landscape looks different. The Emergency Call Box was removed over the past year. It had been a fixture in the arboretum for at minimum a decade. There has not been any activity to replace it. Presumably, the machine was deemed unnecessary due to the ubiquity of cell phones.

On the other side of the arboretum, next to Cline Hall, a new feature was installed. To the left of the light post we see a dog sanitary station. These are a new feature of the Centenary College landscape. They were installed outside of the dormitories to encourage residents and guests to clean up after their dogs.

Since these stations were installed outside of the dormitories, it's a fair assumption that students have pets living with them inside their rooms. According to campus policy, 'pets' are not allowed in the residence halls. Registered service dogs and emotional support animals are allowed as long as they are approved by the proper office on campus. With that being said, the Centenary Campus is open to the public and a very nice place to walk your dog!
